Offset, opposing and crane handles: choosing barber scissor handles

Two scissors with the same steel and length can feel completely different because of the handle. Handle design is often what makes a stylist reorder.

Opposing handles

The classic, symmetrical design: the thumb and finger rings sit opposite each other. It suits stylists who hold the scissor with the thumb deep in the ring, and it is often preferred by those trained on traditional scissors.

Offset handles

The thumb shank is shorter than the finger shank. This lets the hand open in a more natural position and reduces strain on the thumb and wrist over a long day. Offset handles are among the most popular designs today.

Crane handles

A crane handle is an offset handle with a straight, angled finger shank. It allows the stylist to cut with the elbow lower, which many find more comfortable for long sessions.

Swivel thumb

The thumb ring rotates, so the thumb can move without twisting the wrist. Stylists with wrist strain or who cut at awkward angles often choose swivel models, which usually sell at a higher price point.

Finger rests and rings

A finger rest (tang) gives extra control, and removable finger inserts help fit different finger sizes. Three-finger-hole designs and dual finger rests suit specific grips.

What to stock

A practical range includes at least one offset model, one opposing classic and one swivel thumb option, with left-hand versions of your best sellers. See our barber, thinning and pet grooming scissors, which include offset, swivel thumb, dual finger rest and three-finger-hole designs.
