Straight Razor Care: Stropping and Storage Basics

A traditional straight razor can last for decades, but only if it is looked after. Sharing a short care guide with every razor you sell cuts complaints about dull or rusty blades and builds trust with your customers.

Strop before every shave

Stropping realigns the fine edge of the blade. Hold the strop taut, lay the razor flat with the spine leading, and draw it along the leather, flipping on the spine at the end of each pass. A few dozen light passes before each shave are usually enough. Never lead with the edge, as that cuts the strop.

Hone only when needed

Honing on a whetstone removes metal to restore a dull edge. Most users only need it every few months, or when stropping no longer brings the edge back. Many customers prefer to send razors to a professional honing service.

Dry it every time

Water left on the blade, especially near the pivot and tang, is the main cause of rust spots. After each shave, rinse the razor, wipe it dry with a soft towel, and let it air-dry open for a few minutes before closing it.

Oil for longer storage

If the razor will not be used for a while, a thin film of light oil or blade wax protects the steel. Wipe it off before the next shave.

Store it dry and protected

Keep the razor out of steamy bathrooms when possible, in a dry drawer or a case. Avoid sealed plastic bags, which can trap moisture. A cloth pouch or a box with a little ventilation works well.

Care cards for your customers

A small printed care card inside the box, or a care section on the product page, answers most questions before they reach your support team. We can include care instructions in custom packaging for private-label orders.

Common questions

How often should a straight razor be honed?
It depends on use, but many shavers only hone every few months and strop before each shave.

Can stainless straight razors still rust?
Stainless steel resists rust well, but it can still spot if left wet. Drying after each use is the best protection.
