Sourcing surgical instruments from Sialkot: a buyer's checklist

Sialkot in Pakistan is one of the world's best-known centres for surgical instrument manufacturing, supplying distributors and hospital buyers in many countries. Working directly with a manufacturer there can give you a wide range and private label options. A clear enquiry makes the process faster and avoids surprises.
1. Identify each instrument precisely
Instrument names can vary between countries and catalogues. For every item, give the pattern name (for example Mayo, Metzenbaum, Kocher), the catalogue reference, the length, and details such as straight or curved, sharp or blunt, and teeth or serrations. A photo or drawing helps for anything unusual. Our product pages list catalogue references (ST… numbers) to make this easier.
2. Agree the material and finish
Surgical instruments are usually made from martensitic stainless steels that can be hardened. Ask which grade will be used for each item and specify the finish you need, such as satin (matte) or mirror. If your market requires a particular material specification, include it in your enquiry.
3. Understand the manufacturing steps
Quality instruments typically go through forging, machining and grinding, heat treatment (hardening and tempering), polishing and passivation, which improves corrosion resistance. Ask how each step is controlled and inspected.
4. Ask for samples
For a new supplier or a new pattern, approve samples before production. Check the action of joints and ratchets, alignment of jaws and tips, sharpness of cutting edges and the finish.
5. Request quality documents
Depending on your market, you may need documents such as a quality management certificate or registration letters. Ask the manufacturer which documents they can provide and check that they are current. You can view Scissors Town's documents in our certificates section.
6. Specify marking and packaging
State whether instruments should carry your brand, the manufacturer's name or reference numbers, and how they should be packed (individual pouches, boxes, sets).
7. Confirm commercial terms in writing
Minimum order quantity, price, lead time and delivery terms vary by item and quantity. Get them confirmed in a written quotation before you place the order.
