Liposuction cannula sets: types, holes, sizes and fittings

Liposuction cannulas come in many tip patterns, diameters and lengths. Suppliers to aesthetic and plastic surgery clinics usually sell them as sets, so understanding the main options helps you build a set that surgeons will actually use.
1. Tip patterns
| Pattern | Description |
|---|---|
| Entner | Multi-hole cannulas, available for example with 8, 18 or 22 holes, used widely for body contouring. |
| Toledo | A fork-shaped tip with rounded points and a dissecting surface between them, with one central hole. |
| Mercedes | One central hole and two lateral holes near the tip. |
| Kotzur | An arrangement of suction holes designed for areas with more connective tissue. |
| Facial cannulas | Fine cannulas, from around 1.7 mm diameter, for face and neck contouring. |
2. Diameter and length
Diameter is usually stated in millimetres (for example 1.7, 2, 3 or 4 mm), and working length in centimetres (for example 15, 20, 25 or 30 cm). Fine, short cannulas are used for the face and neck; longer, wider cannulas for the abdomen, flanks and thighs. A good set covers the range a surgeon needs for one area.
3. Fittings: Luer lock or threaded
Cannulas connect to a handle or syringe. Luer lock fittings are common for facial work and syringe-based techniques; threaded fittings are common for body cannulas used with a handle and a suction pump. Check which system your customers use before ordering, as the two are not interchangeable.
4. Handles
Handles include fixed handles with a rotatable tube connection, and handles with a hole to interrupt suction. For tumescent local anaesthesia techniques, surgeons often specify particular handles, so list them with the cannulas.
5. Ready-made sets
Common sets include an abdomen and saddlebag set with threaded fittings, and a face set with Luer lock fittings. Fat injection and fat suction syringes are often added for fat-transfer procedures.
