Cuticle Nipper Jaw Sizes Explained

Cuticle nippers are often listed by jaw size, such as full jaw, half jaw or quarter jaw. These sizes describe how long the cutting edge is. Choosing the right sizes is one of the simplest ways to match a nipper range to your customers.
What jaw size means
The jaw is the cutting part at the tip of the nipper. A longer jaw cuts more skin in one bite; a shorter jaw gives more control for small, precise cuts. Jaw sizes are usually given in millimetres, with full, half and quarter used as rough labels.
Quarter jaw
The smallest common size. It is used for fine, detailed work close to the nail and is popular with experienced nail technicians who want maximum control.
Half jaw
A middle size and the most widely sold. It balances control and cutting length, so it suits both salons and retail customers.
Full jaw
The longest cutting edge. It removes more cuticle and hangnail in one cut and is sometimes preferred for pedicure work, but it takes more skill to use near the nail.
Other features to check
- Single or double spring
- Box joint or lap joint
- Sharpness and how cleanly the tips meet
- Finish and grip
Choosing sizes to stock
For most buyers, half jaw is the core size, with quarter jaw for professional lines and full jaw for pedicure sets. Labelling the jaw size clearly on packaging helps customers pick the right tool.
Common questions
Which jaw size is best for beginners?
A half jaw or quarter jaw is usually easier to control than a full jaw.
Is a bigger jaw better?
Not always. A bigger jaw cuts more at once, but a smaller jaw is more precise.
