Barber scissors steel guide: 410C vs 420C vs 440C

The steel a pair of scissors is made from is one of the biggest factors in how sharp it gets, how long it stays sharp and what it costs. Barber and hairdressing scissors are commonly made from three stainless steel families: 410, 420 and 440C.
Why steel grade matters
Stainless steels used for cutting tools balance three things: hardness (how well the edge resists wear), toughness (how well it resists chipping) and corrosion resistance. In general, more carbon allows the steel to be hardened further, which helps an edge last longer, while chromium gives the steel its stain resistance.
The three grades at a glance
| Steel | Character | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 410 | Lower carbon. Easy to work and sharpen, with a softer edge. | Entry-level and economy scissors, student and training kits. |
| 420 | A widely used cutlery and scissor steel with a good balance of hardness, toughness and cost. | Everyday professional scissors and mid-range lines. |
| 440C | High carbon and high chromium. Can be hardened more than 410 and 420, so edges generally last longer. | Premium barber and hairdressing scissors. |
How to choose for your range
- Economy and training lines: 410 keeps prices low and is easy to resharpen.
- Core professional range: 420 offers a reliable balance for daily salon use.
- Premium range: 440C is the usual choice when edge life is the selling point.
Many distributors offer all three, so customers can trade up. Thinning scissors, pet grooming scissors and left-handed models can be made in the same steels.
Other things to specify
Blade edge (convex or bevel), blade length in inches, handle style (offset, crane, swivel thumb), finger rests, finish and colour coatings all shape the final product. Scissors Town makes barber and pet scissors in 410C, 420C and 440C. See our barber and pet scissors range.
